'My Ba's Radio' Wins Two Awards at Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition

"My Ba's Radio" is a short film I co-wrote with young director Victor Chen under the mentorship of Yasu and Bea Tanaka from 42nd Pictures. It won the main prize and an award for cinematography (with our very dear Yuki Eyok behind the camera) at this year's Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition, enabling us to attend Short Shorts Asia Film Festival in Tokyo next year.

Here is a write up by Amzar Anizam on kr8tifexpress.com about the film.

Victor Chen’s directorial debut, My Ba's Radio won 'Best Short Film' and 'Best Cinematography' award at the inaugural Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition (PDSFC) held at Malaysia Content Pitching Centre, together with the 7th Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia Malaysia (SSFFA); which screened 12 short films from all over the world.

My Ba's Radio is a personal story of the director based on his late father; which depicts the life of a family with an old radio. The 10-minute short film which premiered at SSFFA 2016, took four month to shoot using Panasonic DVX200 camera with a guidance and mentorship from Yasu and Bea Tanaka of 42nd Pictures.

“I'll never forget this whole humbling, exciting and life-changing experience of making this short film. A big shout out and thanks to all who have helped make this film happen, especially my beloved crew and friends, supportive family, relatives and others. I hope that one day My Ba's Radio will be screened at film festivals worldwide, so I can share my experience with other aspiring filmmakers,” said the director, who walked away with trophies and two tickets to Tokyo, Japan to attend the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia Japan 2017.

The competition which aims to provide a platform to young filmmakers to produce short films that meet international requirements, also presented the ‘Special Jury Award’ to Palani Veloo from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) for his short film, Apps.

Bea Tanaka, Executive Producer of 42nd Pictures commented, “Yasu and I are proud to mentor and support the aspiring filmmakers, as well as partnering with Panasonic for their first short film competition. From over 40 submissions from all over Malaysia, we finally shortlisted five synopses for production – and while it was very intensive and extensive process for us and the teams; we trust that they gain an insightful experience on the filmmaking process as a whole.

”Organised by Panasonic Malaysia in collaboration with 42nd Pictures and endorsed by FINAS, the short film competition seeks a submission of 400-word synopsis for entry. The shortlisted synopsis will then be developed in the aspect of script writing, storyboarding, production and post-production by professional filmmakers together with the participants
